Deal insights
The Shun Premier 8 Piece Professional Block Set is a Just-okay Deal. The set's metallurgy ( VG-MAX with 68-layer Damascus and forged blades ) matches premium-level benchmarks, and the included accessories and solid bamboo block are consistent with higher-end packaging. However, the price is substantially above typical premium ranges for similar curated 7–12 piece premium sets, so value is limited unless a buyer specifically prioritizes Shun branding or Damascus aesthetics.
Here is why
When selecting block knife sets, focus on blade material and construction, included pieces, and storage/accessories. Here is how this product performs:
1.
Blade Material & Construction (VG-MAX steel; 68-layer Damascus; forged blades) : This matches premium benchmarks: VG-MAX and multi-layer Damascus are typical of higher-end sets and indicate above-typical metallurgy and finish. Premium listings often also report Rockwell hardness; its absence here is common but buyers who care about exact HRC can double-check the detailed spec sheet.
2.
Included Pieces (8-piece set; chef knife; paring knife) : Piece count and composition align with premium curated sets (roughly 7–15 pieces) rather than inflated budget bundles. This is typical for premium positioning where quality of individual knives matters more than high counts.
3.
Included Accessories & Storage (bamboo block; honing steel) : A solid wood block and honing steel are consistent with premium expectations. The listing indicates standard premium accessories; some higher-end packages add detachable or self-sharpening blocks, but the current accessories are typical for this tier.
Deal price at $879.95: sits well above the premium band for block knife sets. No recent price history is provided; given the price, this listing is positioned with high-end or collector-level premium sets and may reflect brand reputation or specialty metallurgy.
Overall, this a Just-okay Deal is reasonable only for buyers seeking a Shun-branded premium knife set or Damascus-clad presentation pieces. If you value brand reputation, go ahead but confirm warranty and return policy before buying; otherwise consider comparing lower-priced premium sets or retailers to find similar VG-MAX/Damascus options at more typical premium prices.
